Dartboards – Fun For The Entire Family

Children, Entertainment No Comments »

Dartboards are excellent platform for the family for family fun time at a low price. They are one of the easiest and cheapest ways to bring a sport into your home which virtually anyone can play.

Consider some factors before you decide getting a new dartboard, however when you have made up your mind on one, you will find many good quality and excellent boards for your selection at very attractive prices. The most important consideration of all is, as ever, safety. A dart is a sharp instrument which can do a lot of serious damage in the wrong hands, so be very careful who has access to the equipment.

First and foremost you will need to check and find space in the room to accommodate the dartboard. It is not just a case of measuring the necessary distance between the wall and the line from which the dart will need to be thrown. There needs to be enough room behind this line for the player to feel comfortable in their stance when throwing the dart. It is useful if there is room for other people to pass behind someone standing on the line, but if you don’t have anywhere big enough to allow for this, you may want to go ahead anyway.

Children’s literature possesses a special place in the intrigue hearts and exceptional minds of many people whose parents began them on the journey to story reading. Through the magical world of storytelling, a young mind benefits in growth through the influences reading – either to or by – place upon a child. When a child listens to a story at a young age, understanding begins to grow within them about the world around them, as well as about themselves. Promoting independent reading at an early age helps to spark curiosity in young people.

Adolescent Mental Health

Children No Comments »

Adolescent Mental Health

Adolescent mental health problems are more common than most people want to admit. As parents, we want to think that our children are normal, if not perfect. Although this is generally far from the truth even in the most healthy families, learning that you have a child with a severe mental illness can be completely devastating for parents. When my Johnny started having adolescent mental health issues, I would not even admit it to myself. I figured that he was just going through a phase. Nonetheless, when he started engaging in self-destructive behaviors, losing contact with the family, and getting worse and worse grades, I knew that something had to be done. I finally faced my worst fear. My son was not normal. He was a good child, but he needed professional psychiatric care.

Of course, finding a good doctor for him was extremely difficult. In many communities, there is a severe shortage of decent adolescent mental health care. Acute care was alright – there was a hospital that would take him in almost immediately – but finding the sort of long-term care that I really felt he needed was more difficult. Adolescent mental health problems often do improve within a few weeks to a few years, but that still leaves the problem of finding treatment in the meantime. You want the best psychiatrist for your adolescent – someone who can be a mentor and role model as well as an excellent doctor. It has to be a decision you take together too. You need to balance your observations and the opinions of your teenager to find someone who they can really work with.

The psychiatrist that I found was an expert in treating adolescent mental health disorders. He treated teenagers with bipolar disorder, acute anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and many other health problems. He actually worked on a referral basis with the acute treatment clinic that my son went to, so I got his name after the first doctor didn’t work out. I could tell that my kid liked him a lot, and I held him in the highest esteem. It seemed like the first good break that we had gotten since this whole ordeal began, and I was optimistic that more positive developments would follow.

It turns out that I was right. Basically, adolescent mental health disorders come in two flavors. There are the disorders that are simply the product of adolescents – anxiety, depression, and that sort of thing – and those which become active during adolescence and then don’t go away. If my son had had schizophrenia or some other chronic disease, the prognosis would have been quite a bit bleaker. As an adolescent with chronic anxiety and depression problems, however, he wasn’t destined to face lifelong troubles in the same way.

Academic Summer Camp

Parents often wish that the kids didn’t get bored during summer vacation. There is salvation! Academic Summer Camps are terrific for both younger children and teenagers. They help kids to socialize, they keep them entertained and they offer a wide range of subjects. It’s not all work and there are other activities on offer when students want a break from study. The best of these camps supply first class instructors in a safe, fun environment with quality equipment. Some are organized by Universities, some by Prep Schools and some are privately run.

Computer skills are one of the most popular choices for Academic Summer Camps. Stanford University and UC Berkeley run Computer Camps for children from Elementary, Middle and High School. Small classes cater for different skill levels and each student is given a PC. Instruction is hands on and includes Java Programming, Web Design and Power Point presentation. There are also classes in business and marketing.

The Sally Ride Science Camps for Girls at Caltech and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) offer 5 days of intensive study for girls entering Grades 4 through 9. Students can choose from a list of science majors, including Astronomy, Marine Science, and Engineering. There are workshops, experiment sessions and projects to construct robots, rockets and marine habitats. This Academic Summer Camp also provides recreational activities.

Endicott College in Massachusetts is the place for Prep Camp Excel courses for 9th and 10th Grade students. The 8-day camp is ideal preparation for life in college. There are three major programs, Essay Writing, PSAT Prep and Test Taking Training, and Study Skills. One to one instruction helps students with their math, vocabulary and grammar skills. They take two full PSAT examinations and are given guidance on taking notes and managing their time efficiently. The summer camp for academia also encourages relaxing excursions too.

Delphi in Oregon is the location for a camp that combines academic study and sports and recreation. It is the best of all worlds for children aged between 8 and 18. The summer camp has a choice of 4, 5, or 6-week camps. Subjects for study include Math, English, Science, and Computer Technology. There are more than 250 classes, including Photography, Art, Music, Drama, Nutrition or Creative Writing. The 700-acre campus is a welcoming environment for horseback riding, tennis and archery. Students also enjoy trips to the beach, going for hikes, and camping.

Whether students favor Chess Camps, Science Camps, or Computer Camps or they want to focus on SAT preparation, they will have a productive summer and make new friends. Many courses teach them how to relate to their environment. These Academic Summer Camps may help them to decide on which college major to take or which career path to choose. They will also encourage independence and self-reliance, qualities they will need in the future.

Behavior modification for children

Children No Comments »

Behavior modification for children is most successful when you get an early start!

Although it may sound like a mean thing to say (and I love kids!), it’s nonetheless true. Training and disciplining children is much like training pets! Behavior modification for children needs to begin early in order to be successful.

Think about it. If you brought a puppy home and just let him do as he pleased for the first couple of years, can you imagine what an undisciplined dog you’d end up with in your home? This strategy couldn’t possibly work out and your pet would be one unhappy camper, too!

While you won’t be training and disciplining babies, once they start talking and understand what you’re saying, it’s a good time to begin a gently conducted program of behavior modification for children to weed out unacceptable behavior. You’ve got to let Jimmy know that he cannot, under any circumstances, whack his sister over the head because he was mad. No spitting in the house. That sort of thing. You certainly don’t want to make your kids into little robots, jumping on their case for every little thing. You just have to draw a line, beyond which an appropriate punishment ensues as a consequence.

Some Moms are so harried, particularly with two or more kids who are close in age, that it’s difficult to keep their sanity, much less being on top of every misdeed. When you’re multi-tasking in the household, the job can be overwhelming. However, behavior modification for children, begun at an early age and mapped out in a consistent planned response, will save you from having to yell at your kids in the grocery store, a few years down the road, in order to control them. You love your kids so much, they’re so cute and lovable, it’s difficult to crack down on the little sweeties. This is why you need a plan.

Your successful behavior modification for children model may require a bit of behavior modification on your part! As Franklin Roosevelt said, it’s best to walk softly and carry a big stick. What we mean here is that you should not be yelling at your kids when you’re correcting them. You’re the adult. You must adopt a calm, firm and gentle demeanor, speaking in a normal tone of voice. When you lose control of your emotions, how do you expect a kid will respond? He or she will assume that everything’s OK until you start yelling at them. They’ll also learn, by example, to yell at you when they’re displeased. This can trigger problems that last for many years, well into the teens and beyond. Avoid losing your cool.

It might be a good idea to make a list of absolutely unacceptable behaviors that you can look over with Dad and come to a mutual agreement on the specific consequences of various infractions.

Let’s say your child steals something from a friend or at a store. You cannot condone this behavior. In this case, your behavior modification for children plan should have a consistent consequence, delivered in a no-nonsense tone. Tell the child that he must return the item, and apologize for his action.

To drive home the no-stealing policy, you might augment the lesson by taking the child’s favorite toy or book (no teddy bears or other security related items) and letting him know you will keep possession of the item for a week. Gently let him know that you realize this is a disappointment to him, but you want him to understand the feelings of losing something by theft. Most likely, he’ll find this outrageous, having a tantrum or crying hysterically. However, at the end of the week, when you return his ’stolen’ item, he will have gained some empathy for the person who was his victim.
There’s no need for harsh words or meanness. Just the facts, delivered firmly, with a consequence should do the trick.

When you set a well planned, behavior modification program for children in place during the early years, you will have a much smoother road when the kids hit their teens.

baby food jars

Don’t throw those empty baby food jars away! Five ways to use them to organize your home

We’re all aware of the general movement to produce less household waste and so improve the environment. Recycling programs are available in almost every community. Just about everything, from newspaper to plastic bottles can be recycled and used to reduce waste of resources. However, when you recycle cans or whatever, some energy, time and labor is necessary to produce the ‘renewable’ item.

So, in many cases, it makes sense to cut out the middle man, so to speak. For example, plastic milk jugs can be cleaned out and used to store cleaning agents. You might also cut off the tops and use them to start next year’s garden plants or vegetables. Likewise, empty baby food jars can be used for handy, neat storage solutions in your home. After all, you paid a pretty penny for each one of those baby food jars. Why not give them a new life, save some money and clean up some of the clutter? Here are five ways to use them to good purpose throughout your home.

Most people buy the little spice jars at the supermarket, which are quite costly. Next time you run out of a spice, instead of purchasing a replacement jar at the grocery, visit an herb shop and buy the loose herb or spice in bulk. These shops usually package them in a little plastic bag, closed with a twist-tie. A half ounce of dried parsley will cost about 25 cents. You refresh your supply, using the clean baby food jar to store the herb. Slap a folder file label on it and put it in your usual herb and spice storage space. You’ve saved a couple of bucks over the fancy supermarket product and contributed to an improved environment! Continue your program until all of your herbs and spices reside in baby food jars. You’ll find the savings remarkable. You may find yourself able to afford a larger spice choice.

Everyone has at least a minimal sewing repair kit. Avid sewers often have extensive supplies of sewing notions. Why spend hard earned cash buying a ready-made storage cabinet for these items? Items like pins, needles, buttons and beads fit perfectly in a baby food jar. Use a combination of the small and large sizes to store these supplies in a neat and accessible space.

How about all of those nuts, bolts, washers, picture hangers and cup hooks? Instead of cluttering up a ‘junk drawer’ with paper or plastic packages, that eventually fall apart, leaving a disorganized mess, separate and organize such items in – yes – empty baby food jars. Oh, my, your home is getting neater by the minute!

You can make good use of these versatile jars in the frig as well. The larger jars are perfect to mix up a marinade or an oil and vinegar dressing. They’re also great for that bit of leftover corn from tonight’s dinner. Why buy clarified butter, at a premium price, when you can make your own? Label your jars and save space in that cramped frig.

People who take vitamins on a daily basis can take good advantage of empty baby food jars. With just seven jars, you can put your daily assortment in order. Attach a label, identifying which supplements are in the jar, along with the day of the week. You no longer have to sift through and open a dozen bottles each day. You just grab Monday’s jar and take them. At the end of the week, you replenish your supply in one effort. You’ll save time and frustration. When you refill for the coming week, you’ll certainly notice if you’re running low on one or another.

Baby food jars are recyclable in so many ways, without ever leaving your home for re-processing. Save money as well, always a good thing, these days!

autistic children

autistic children

Though no one would wish for a child with autism, parents who give birth to a child with this condition love them just as much as they would any other child that would come into their lives. These children are different, and some never learn to communicate, but other can go on to a life very close to what others would consider normal. Now that more and more people are aware of this condition, there are more options for parents with autistic children. There are programs that can help some of them where no help was found before.

Some parents are unaware that they have autistic children until the child is at last aged one year. Some don’t know until later. The programs out there to help autistic children often work best with an early diagnosis, but that does not mean a child who is diagnosed much later can not benefit. Many of these programs are geared towards teaching or helping these children with social interactions, which are often very hard for them.

Autistic children that are diagnosed with high function autism, otherwise known as Asperger’s, are most likely to respond to the treatments and the programs, but most autistic children will get something out of it. Those with high function often can communicate, but they may need help learning how to relate to others. This is a huge problem for them, as sometimes their emotional attachment to others is skewed a bit, and they don’t know how to make friends, and if they do, they certainly have a hard time keeping them.

More and more people are becoming aware of autistic children, and everyone should be aware that there are many of them out there. The next time you see a mom in the store with a child that is making noise and carrying on, or doing something you might consider odd, remember that this child might be autistic. Too many people shoot other parents mean looks when it seems a child is out of control, but you never know why they are acting as such.

Raising autistic children is hard, and the last thing such a parent or a child needs to feel is as if they are different and unable to be out in society. Autism is not something that is easily understood, but that does not mean those children are any less important than those who were born without this condition. A little compassion goes a long way.
