Fun Stuff To Make

Fun Stuff To Make

Whenever I’m bored or don’t have anything to do, I wish I find fun stuff to make. I have always loved making crafts of all kinds, But recently I’ve expanded my hobbies. Nowadays, I don’t only make crafts, but also design and build functional engineering projects. I’ve built robots, learned some basic programming, and even done some carpentry around the house. It’s all fun stuff to make, and it’s always a challenge to learn a new technique.

The most important thing with hobbies of any sort is to try to get the most use you can out of your tools. A lot of different fun stuff to make actually uses similar implements. For example, if you buy some basic would tools you can do carving, sculpture, and also some light carpentry work. Try to take that particular set of tools as far as you can before you invest in a whole new hobby such as making fabric crafts. Not only will you become more skilled with the tools you bought, but you will save a lot of money which you can then use on making fun stuff.

When I was single, I never had any trouble picking out fun stuff to make. I would just see what fit my whim at the time and dive right into it. Now that I have a wife and kids, however, I like to make kid friendly crafts as much as possible. With proper supervision, you’d be amazed at the range of crafts kids can work on. My kids help me build robots, solve puzzles, and even put together a cupboard. Of course I have to do the more dangerous work – the sawing and cutting – myself, but they can still help with hammering, measuring, gluing, and other tasks like that.

Although I try to include my kids whenever I can, sometimes I find fun stuff to make that I would rather work on on my own. This is especially true when I’m doing heavier, more power tool intensive projects. I love my kids to death, but supervising them during woodworking can be a little bit of headache. On some days, I actually have more fun spending some time by myself. I think every parent needs to do this every once in a while. It is nice to be able to spend a little bit of quality time by yourself and get away from the burdens of parenting for a few minutes now and then.

Discount Craft Supplies

Discount Craft Supplies

The best way to buy discount craft supplies is not to buy them at all. Sometimes, you can find all that you need around the house. This is one of the best ways to reduce the number of craft products that you buy. You can use scraps from other crafts, use found objects, and reuse things that you find around your house. Packaging from today’s consumer items can often be used for craft supplies tomorrow. Old bottles, cartons, cans, cardboard packages – pretty much all of it can be incorporated into your craft projects.

Of course, some projects require slightly higher quality materials or things that you can’t find around your home. For these things, it is important to have a good source of discount craft supplies. There are basically two approaches. One of them is local, the others international. The local approach is simple. You want to see the resources available in the community you live in an exploit them to the greatest degree possible. You can find discount craft supplies at local dollar stores, for example, or at flea markets. Fabric warehouses and other such places also often have cheap craft equipment. It really depends on your craft, but for most things you can probably find supplies discounted around your area.

The international approach is a little bit more complex. There is a huge market for a lot of craft stores, so if you can find direct retailers, you can save a lot of money. You can look on eBay, for example, or on Craigslist. Even better, you can often chop from trading companies that are located overseas. Particularly if you are willing to buy wholesale craft supplies in bulk, you can take advantage of the savings.

The problem with the international crafts is that there is almost an embarrassment of riches. There are so many different places to buy discount craft supplies that is very difficult to evaluate what is the best store. The way I do it is to find a couple suppliers but I really like and consistently order from them. I’m not too worried about always finding the lowest price. I’d rather just have someone I can trust who sells for reasonably cheaply. That way, I don’t have to spend hours and hours looking for new craft store supplies online. I can simply go with what I already know works. That leaves a lot more time for the actual craft project – the part that I really want to spend my time on.

Discontinued Fabric

Crafts No Comments »

If your hobbies include sewing, you know that finding discontinued fabric is somewhat of an art. Vintage fabric can be had for very little or very much depending on how lucky you are and how skilled you are at finding it. The key is to develop a good eye for what you want. You can find fabric discontinued almost everywhere, but sometimes the prices are very different. Sometimes discontinued fabric is sold as discounted, remaindered cloth. This is especially true if you’re willing to buy ends and pieces. Other times, It is sold as vintage fabric and costs quite a bit more. Still other times, you can find battered old clothing with fabric pieces that are still very good. The fabric might be priceless by itself, but the clothing is all but worthless. If you’re willing to raid old clothes for the fabric that you need, you can save a bundle on your hobby.

I have been a fan of vintage fabrics for many years, but for most of that time I haven’t really been able use them very much. You see, before you can really afford the luxury of good vintage fabric, you have to perfect your sewing skills. There is no point in wasting good fabric on an amateurish job after all. That is why I would shop cheaply In a discontinued fabric store downtown. I could find pretty nice stuff for very little money and, even if it wasn’t quite what I wanted, it would usually make for a good project.

One day, however, I had a good friend over who was a much more experienced seamstress. She started fawning over one of my discontinued fabrics and asked where I had bought it. I told her, and she was quite surprised. Apparently, it was quite a rare strain of vintage fabric, and something she’d been looking for for a long time. That got me thinking. I decide to offer her  trade: she could have the discontinued fabric IF she would teach me all about finding high-quality cotton cloth. She readily agreed.

It has taken me a few years, but now I can definitely tell the wheat from the chaff. Once you know the signs to look for – the high thread count, the elegant patterns, and the intricate textures – it is easy to tell the good from the bad. The problem is that it is a hard skill to obtain unless you know the right person. The best solution is to make friends in the sewing community.

Creating flyers that create buzz!

Creating flyers that create buzz!

When you see a flyer in your mailbox, what’s your first reaction? It probably depends on whether it captures your attention for even a moment. A flyer without a photo or graphics is pretty plain Jane. There’s nothing to induce you to give it a second look. There it goes, directly into the round file. On the other hand, if you reach into your mailbox and pull out a flyer with an intriguing photo or graphic, you’re likely to give it at least a brief look.

When considered from the consumer’s point of view, creating flyers must be done with finesse and forethought. Otherwise, you’re just wasting time and money. Let’s look at the points you should consider prior to creating flyers. These points can make the difference between being discarded without a look, to making a sale.

When you set out to create flyers, your focus is typically within your own community. You may be selling a service or product, or making an announcement, such as advertising a garage sale or looking for a missing person. Creating flyers that are effective requires an approach suited to the pitch.

For example, let’s say you’re a landscaper trying to drum up local business. An 8 1/2 x 11 trifold flyer that opens to a lovely, local photo of a beautiful garden will catch the eye of your potential customer. This recipient will at least open the flyer, because you’ve provided a happy moment of imagining. The other two-thirds of the flyer should contain concise, easy to understand benefits of your product or service. When creating flyers of a sales nature, strive for a clean, straightforward look. An unsolicited flyer has a very short shelf life. Keep your customer engaged. Get to the point and leave it at that.

Creating flyers that bring a maximum return requires that you not be bashful about stating the benefits to the customer. If you’re trying to get people to come to the local animal shelter to adopt homeless kitties and dogs, get your cute animal photos up front, followed by histories and testimonials. Point out the statistics on people with pets living longer and happier lives. You’re not hyping the public, you’re giving them honest information with a promise of a more enjoyable life and a roadmap to the goal.

Let’s say you are creating flyers to promote your business. No matter what your business, an appropriate visual is essential. Photos and graphics spark the imagination of the viewer and bring them to a place that’s receptive to your proposal. If you tow vehicles for a living, a visual representation of a squeaky-clean tow truck hauling a massive RV engenders confidence on the part of your potential customer. This simple strategy in creating flyers may well edge out your less imaginative competitor who opts for a plain text message.

Creating flyers that bring business your way is an art. Spend the time and thought necessary to make it happen!
