Changing The World With Green Products

Environment, Misc, Shopping No Comments »

Increasingly companies and individuals are more conscious of the effects that they have on the world around them. There are many governmental regulations that work to help keep pollutants from the environment and countries around the world are working together for a solution to the crisis. Still the most inspiring result is seeing families and individuals who are earnestly looking for ways to be gentler to the environment.

An excellent way to reduce environmental effects on our surroundings is by buying green products. There are green goods available in nearly every industry. From furniture, to toys, clothing, food and packaging, green products can be found in nearly every store, no matter what the specialty. Taking advantage of these products and making them a part of your life is a great way to contribute to a greener environment.

Air And Water Pollution

Air And Water Pollution

People pay so much attention to global warming nowadays that many other important environmental problems are often ignored or given short shrift. Decades before people even began to talk about the greenhouse effect, the effects of air and water pollution were well known. Ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution, there has been a dark side to our prosperity, and we can not afford to forget it. When we pollute the groundwater and cloud the air with smog, it affects our health, our environment, and our quality of life.

The difficult thing about working to clean up air and water pollution is that the source and the solution are not always local. River pollution, for example, can come from far upstream. A factory 200 miles upstream can gravely affect health, fishing, and quality of life downstream. With air pollution, the effects can be even more widespread. For example, the wildfires in Southern California produced so much smoke that people hundreds of miles up the coast in Oregon and Washington could feel the effects.

Still, there are more ways to address air and water pollution than ever before. We have a culture which is based on the free flow of information, and the laws our country passes have international effects. Air and water pollution activist groups work with governments, international organizations, and other activist groups in foreign countries to clean up and improve the environment. We can use satellites, official records, and the Internet to keep track of the pollution records of different companies and hold them accountable. The huge volume of info available is probably our greatest weapon in the fight for clean air and water.

Nevertheless, the place where an activist can make the most difference is in his own backyard. It can be very hard to affect the air and water pollution laws in other communities, let alone other countries. In the place where you live, however, you can work for tougher legislation, more corporate responsibility, and better government oversight. You do not have to look to distant shores in order to make a big difference in the way the world works. As the old saying goes, think globally, act locally.

It can be hard to get involved in fighting against air and water pollution because of how large the problem is. Still, I would encourage anyone who is interested to get involved. The good thing about having big problems is that there is so much room to make a difference. You can start anywhere and fight the good fight. Everyone knows that we won’t be able to clean up polluted air and water overnight, but in time we can make the world a better place.

waste water

waste water

Have you ever wondered where your waste water goes when you flush your toilet or when you drain your dish water? This is something that we don’t think about a lot, but there are moments when everyone might think about it, and wonder how all of this dirty water is not polluting the environment and making people sick. Luckily for us, things have changed since the days when sewer material ran right into the streets, though there are times when raw sewage goes where it shouldn’t.

Most waste water in towns and cities goes right to the water treatment plants. This type of plant will actually clean the water so well that is comes out the other end much cleaner than the rain that falls or the water in the lakes and rivers. It is usually cleaned and dumped into a river or lake, and everything goes right back where it started. Though this is not comfortable to think about, it must be safe, or we would all be very sick people.

When you live in a rural area, you may or may not have waste water management. Though many think that this water is often recycled back into the system, this is usually not true. There may come a day when we have to do that, but I’m not sure I would want to know if this were the case. I don’t care how clean the water might be, the thought of drinking recycled waste water is just too much for me. If this is already something that I have done, please, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.

Farms have a different way of dealing with waste water. Much of it goes back into the ground, but there is no water supply where it goes. It simply serves as fertilization. The solid waste is often thrown out in the fields as a fertilizer as well. Though this is not a pretty thing to see in your mind, but remember that all fertilizer is made from pretty much the same thing. This is just the way things are done, but it does help if you don’t have to think about it. If it were not safe, we would not be doing it. Farmers are great about using everything over and over again, and not letting anything go to waste. Perhaps the rest of us should take a page out of their book. They have been, and might always be, the original environmentalists.
