A Basic Guide to the National Football League

Games, Sports No Comments »

Football, America’s pastime sports event, has since overrun baseball many years ago. What could be better? Constant action, brute force combined with the grace of a long, perfect pass, and the almost lunacy of the fans make football the sport to watch.

For the football impaired, NFL stands for the National Football League or, as I call it, National Football Lunacy. Why would men want to risk their lives every week to win a ballgame?

Action Adventure Games

Action Adventure Games

I had really been a big fan of action adventure games ever since I was a kid. The first action and adventure games that I ever played, of course, were games of the imagination. I would Run around pretending to be some sort of mythical superhero or an errant knight. We would have quests to undertake, adventures to complete, and feats of strength to perform. Honestly, I think that childhood imagination games are probably the model for every action adventure game ever made. There is never another point in your life when you have such a vivid and powerful imagination which you enjoy so much as during childhood.

Still, the action adventure games that people make to entertain older children and adults are pretty fantastic and vivid. I remember playing Advanced Dungeons & Dragons when I was about 10 years old, and loving every moment of it. Although looking back on those days I’m surprised at how simplistic the game was, at the time it seemed like such a complex and fantastic adventure to be going on. There were magical items to get, spells cast, dragons to defeat, and even a few puzzles to solve along the way. It was the first real action adventure game that I ever played, and I was actually absolutely captivated by it.

Of course, as action and adventure games have grown up, they have moved into the realm of computing. Nowadays, the best action role playing games are online. There are all sorts of different games for different tastes. There are the massive strategy games where people all over the world compete for empires online. There are the arcade action adventure games where you can test your mettle and reflexes in real time combat with people across the globe. And of course there are those games that combine aspects of both.

I would say that my favorite action adventure games of all time are the legend of Zelda games. I guess I’ve been playing them almost since the series started, and have won several of them. They take hours and hours to play, but they are well worth the time and effort. They really immerse you inside the universe and, by the time they’re finished, you have completed a satisfying quest and solved some very difficult puzzles. One of the things I really like about them is that they combine plot and action so flawlessly. You have to wonder all over a giant interactive map, killing dragons and solving riddles while at the same time defeating countless monsters, villains, and other NPCs. It really makes for a satisfying combination of different sorts of game playing. By the time I’m done with one of those action adventure games, I always feel well satisfied.

Play Monopoly Online

Play Monopoly Online

I have always loved playing the Monopoly game, but it is so much work. You have to get everyone together in the same place, set up the board, and spend literally hours moving your pieces around. You have to keep track of every transaction and it inevitably gets complicated as certain players start to go bankrupt. That is why I was so overjoyed to find out that I could play Monopoly online. I get to have the same great game experience without the drawbacks and inconveniences that made it such a rare event for me.

The neat thing about playing Monopoly online is that there are servers set up that are dedicated to it. That means that, practically anytime you want to play a game of Monopoly, you can probably find someone who is willing to play with you. You have access to players from all over the world, so someone is bound to be interested.

Of course there are disadvantages as well. When you play Monopoly online, it is easy for players to get bored and walk away from the game. Many games don’t keep running all the way to the end, since people tend to have other commitments before things are over. Only the true diehard fanatics will always stay. You also don’t have the actual physical board there. There’s something neat about moving pieces around and actually watching your money accumulate that you miss out on with online Monopoly.

Nonetheless, despite these disadvantages it still is nice to be able play Monopoly online. I so rarely get the opportunity to set up the full board game with people in my house, but anytime I have half an hour or so I can start a game on the Internet. I have even made a few friends doing it. Apparently, there are quite a few boardgame addicts out there, and many of them have taken to the Internet to find new competitors. If you are good at Monopoly – and I am very good at it – you can earn their respect and even their admiration.

There are a lot of other online boardgames I’ve gotten interested in recently. I like to play Risk online a lot of the time. It can get kind of nasty when you’re playing against friends, but when you play on the Internet  It always stays sort of impersonal. It is just a good clean game played with strangers. If you win, nothing is gained. If you lose nothing is lost.

Free Online Adventure

Free Online Adventure Games

Until a few years ago, I used to only play the really expensive, pay based adventures online. I was a big World of Warcraft fan, and I was willing to pay the subscription fee. I figure that free online adventure games probably weren’t worth all that much. After all, if they were so good, why didn’t people pay money for them? The very fact that so many people were willing to pay for the games I was playing seem to justify them.

Although I still play World of Warcraft online, I have actually discovered the virtues of free online adventure games. A lot of the free online RPG games that I have played are actually better than some of the paid ones. You see, when people design a free online adventure game they usually do it out of A love of games or a fanatical dedication to programming. Some of these games are a little bit rough around the edges and haven’t had all the kinks worked out of them, but what they lack in seamless graphics, they make up for in exciting game play and intricate storytelling. Whether you’re into online strategy games, fantasy battles, or role-playing games, there probably is a free adventure game for you.

Of course, if you’re a good graphics fanatic, you might be disappointed by most, if not all, of the free online adventure games. Many of them are done in a simple, retro style that doesn’t take up a lot of processing power. I have always actually liked this look. It somehow seems to distract less from the gameplay than really fancy graphics do. Don’t get me wrong – sometimes I love beautiful pictures, but other times I would rather focus on the game and let my imagination fill in the gaps.

The only drawback with free online adventure games is that you usually have to put up with advertising. Some of them constantly have ads in the background, whereas with others you only have to put up with ads at certain key junctures. Usually, however, it isn’t too bad. It only momentarily distract you from the game, and soon you learn to tune it out completely. When you don’t have to pay for a game, usually you’re willing to put up with a couple small inconveniences. As far as drawbacks go, it is definitely a minor one. And if it really bothers you that much, some free online adventure games allow you to pay a small fee to avoid ads.

Euchre Tournament

Games No Comments »

Euchre Tournament

Growing up in the Midwest, I learned to play euchre practically before I learned how to play poker. Euchre tournaments were the event of choice for a Friday night get-together. Although in the summer I preferred to play tennis, in the winter I loved to get together after work for a euchre game or two. We would get about eight people together and at a couple of tables, playing hand after hand and chatting up a storm. We would have drinks, smoke, and eat dinner together, playing sloppier and sloppier games as the night went on.

The great thing about a euchre tournament as opposed to some other sort of card game is that euchre is so easy. Basically, there is just enough strategy involved to make things interesting. In a game of euchre, a mediocre player can hold his own around excellent players because the game is more than half about luck. Nonetheless, there are certain places where you have to make the right decision, keeping the game interesting. You don’t have to be really sharp, so you can get drunk while you play. Nonetheless, when you win you feel like you deserve the credit. Basically, it’s a game halfway between hearts and war.

Of course it can get pretty competitive every now and then. Usually, we wouldn’t have a formal euchre tournament, but every once in a while we would set up an official competition. It would take a long time to do. Everyone would get a chance to play with every other player on as a partner so that having a lousy partner wouldn’t negatively impact your overall score. At the end of the night, we would tally up wins and losses and declare a grand winner. A typical euchre tournament could go on for several hours, but we didn’t mind. We would be too busy talking smack, gloating, and gossiping to care.

Of course, there was one other aspect of the game that made it a lot of fun to play with your friends. Basically, the game of euchre is almost designed to make cheating easy. People would always try to get away with table talk, telling their partners what they had. At other times, folks would even try to stack the deck or steal the deal. Half of the fun was trying to get away with something or to catch the other team out when they tried to cheat in the euchre tournament.
