Treat Your Home Windows with Insulated Patio Door Drapes

Home Decorating, Home Improvement No Comments »

When you have invited any visitors over, it is most pleasant and heart warming to have a patio door with a welcoming deck. You can entertain them in countless ways on a deck and have a great starting point for a backyard adventure if you live on a large lot. Patio doors are very convenient but buying drapes for them can be a pain. If you live in California or another warm southern state, you will just need drapes for privacy and decoration. If you live somewhere the temperature regularly drops below 30 degrees however, your patio door can be the one spot in your house where all of your heat can escape. This can add hundreds of dollars each year onto your heating bill but can easily be avoided with some nice insulated patio door drapes.

Art Frames

Finding or Making Amazing Art Frames

When you find a great piece of art, it may already come with a frame on it. You may like this frame, so you can just hang it on the wall and be done with it. However, there are times when the art frames that come with some pieces are not what the owner wants, or the art may not come with a frame at all. The right or wrong frame can make or break the way a piece of art looks, and how it blends or contrasts with the existing décor in any room. That is when someone must go out and find the right frames for what they have brought home.

Most art frames are made of wood, though there are some exceptions. The stain of the wood should compliment the colors in the art. However, some do not, and that is usually because those selling the art expect the buyer to get their own frame that goes with their own décor. Other times, it is a matter of expense. Some art frames may come with no stain so that the buyer can then choose the right shade and do with it what they want. Most don’t realize how complicated framing art can really be, especially when buying valuable pieces.

If you are looking for simple art frames that will not take away from or overwhelm a piece of art, you can go with a stain that matches what you already have. If you aren’t sure what you are going to do with a room, wait until the remodeling job is done before you choose your stain. You can also paint art frames in various colors, but you don’t want it to overwhelm the painting. This is why most won’t do that. There are some exceptions, but if painting the frames, most will choose to go with white or black when doing this.

When you are going to built your own art frames, you should look around online to find plans that explain how you can do this, and how to do it right. The great thing about frames for art is that you can mess up without hurting the art, and you can try until you get it right. Learning how to do these can be a lot of fun, and you can learn something about all types of wood working when you do this. You can also find great art frames by looking for other paintings of the same size at flea markets and other second hand establishments. You may just find what you need in one of them.

Art Deco Posters

Art Deco Posters

The 1930s was a decade for innovative design with companies looking to advertise their products and services with style. Art Deco posters capture the design movement that embraced buildings, fashion, modes of transport, painting, film and interior design. This style is still popular today and many architectural examples are admired. Collectors like to buy everything from wireless sets to dinner services.

Before the invention of television, the poster was a key tool of marketing. Going to the cinema was a popular pastime and many movies used an Art Deco poster campaign to gain publicity. There are prints of these available today, covering genres such as film noir, gangster films, thrillers, and musicals.

There is also a market in reproductions of café signs, inspired by the originals. These tend to be simple images, perhaps just a single steaming cup of coffee. Jazz musicians are another popular category. They are depicted playing in dark, smoky nightclubs.

Of all the companies to make great use of the Art Deco poster, none used them more than the cruise liners. These posters show the liner as a powerful but elegant giant of the ocean. They are presented as majestic vessels, ready to take their passengers to far off, exotic locations. The most iconic image of them all, because of the tragedy that followed, is a modern print showing the White Star Line’s Titanic, although it met its fate before the Art Deco poster age.

Automobiles and steam trains too are the subject of this type of image. The London to Paris overnight express is one such train. Sometimes, glamorous women and handsome men in the height of fashion are behind the wheel of stylish cars, promising speed and a heady lifestyle. Racing cars too are depicted, racing round the race tracks of the day. Tourism was a growing industry in the 1930s for the wealthier classes. Tourist destinations, such as Nice, Paris, New York, India and Egypt were given the Art Deco make over.

Many iconic buildings were designed in the style and best selling posters show the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Big Ben Tower in London. However, the city most associated with Art Deco buildings is New York and prints depict the Empire State Building, Flatiron building and the Chrysler Building.

One of the artists to specialize in Art Deco posters available to buy today is Tamara de Lempicka, a Polish born artist who produced a series of beautiful women in different poses, sometimes dressed and sometimes naked.

The choice of posters is extremely diverse and there is something to please everyone. There are even abstract geometric patterns in the style. Almost every art form is represented including a series of pictures of ballet dancers in beautiful costumes, dancing in famous productions. Reputed to be the greatest dancer of all time, Nijinsky is captured in his prime. There are also posters of Stravinsky’s famous work, The Firebird. Still Lives of flowers and fruit are also painted in the style.

Sheet Straps

Sheet Straps

Some things in life are endless sources of frustration. They seem simple enough to deal with if they were to happen once in a while, but when you deal with them day after day, you can really become a bit out of your mind each time. Sheets are a simple thing, and they serve a simple purpose, but they are far from perfect. You may change your sheets once a week or once every few days, but you may fight with them each day when you make your bed. When it comes to fitted sheets, you almost have to have sheet straps if you want to keep your sanity.

I don’t know which one of us does it, but between my husband and me, someone is flipping around in their sleep a lot. It is probably both of us, as we don’t have the most comfortable bed in the world. Each morning the fitted sheet is pulled from at least one corner. If we had sheet straps, that really wouldn’t be a problem. Each time I make our bed and change the sheets, I fight with those same corners popping off just as I put the opposite one on. Again, I should really invest in some sheet straps to stop this from happening.

Sheet straps are very simple, but a very useful thing. They attach to the corners of the fitted sheets so that they do not flop up and off the corners of the mattress, at least for the most part. They are not perfect by any means, but they do work very well most of the time. Both my mom and my grandmother used them, though I think the ones that my grandmother used were ones that she made on her own. That’s not a problem now, as you can get sheet straps in most stores where you buy home and bath accessories.

You can buy certain types of sheets that should keep the sheet corners on the bed without the use of sheet straps, but it does depend on your mattress. If you want to try these, ask in your store for sheets made for a mattress that is a bit deeper than yours. You can also ask for ones that are made for your size mattress, but have more material that goes under the mattress. These may work without sheet straps, but it does depend on how much you toss and turn.

Five simple room design ideas to enhance the value of your home

If you’re thinking of selling your home, or simply looking to add to the enjoyment of your home, you needn’t spend thousands of dollars to make a substantial difference. Here are five simple room design ideas that can make you feel as though you’ve renovated on a shoestring. If you’re handy and comfortable with DIY projects, most can be completed by you for the cost of materials and a little elbow grease.

A window seat is one of the easiest room design changes you can make. Given that the original room size is sufficient, this room design change is adaptable to almost any room in your house. Bedrooms, dining rooms and kitchens are good candidates. Consider also that a window seat is multi-functional. For example, installing a window seat in a bedroom provides comfy seating, while also serving as storage space for blankets or toys. A small kitchen nook with a window seat adds to your usable space, because you needn’t allow space for chairs which are pushed back. You can store less often used china, linens and appliances in the seat.

If you don’t have a fireplace, consider installing a freestanding corner fireplace. This room design idea adds charm and helps save on winter heating, while taking up little space. This is a fairly easy DIY project which can be done in a weekend. When you decide to sell your home, a fireplace is a definite plus.

Window greenhouses are trendy and beautiful additions to any room design. Again, if you’re handy with tools, this is but a weekend’s worth of work. A window greenhouse extends your inside space outwards and visually brings the indoor and outdoor gardens closer together and makes a lovely spot to showcase your houseplants.

Kitchen islands are terrific space savers and add to the efficiency of kitchen tasks. If your kitchen is on the small side, you can still design a kitchen island scaled to the available space. You get additional counter space and lots of storage space beneath the island. Plan your island to work for you. For example, place utensil drawers close to your stove. Consider a hanging rack above the island for handy access to pots and pans. With the proper skills and tools, this room design project can be another DIY undertaking.

Adding a skylight is a more complex improvement, but still falls into the advanced DIY category. If you need a professional to install the window, the cost is minimal when compared with the value added to your home. Rooms with a northern or eastern exposure benefit from the additional light. You can also add Roman shades or slider coverings for winter use.

Look around your home to see which of these room design ideas suit your purposes. Not only will you reap the enjoyment of each of these features, but when you do sell your home, you’ll recoup far more than you’ve invested!

mattress pillow

Home Decorating No Comments »

There is nothing more desirable to some of us than a restful night’s sleep. The right mattress pillow top can make the difference between a restless evening and a comfy dream-evoking getaway. There are many different designs in mattress pillow toppers so you do want to do your homework in the search.

The prospect of quickly choosing between the many different products available is pretty attractive but not very realistic. This kind of purchase shouldn’t be taken lying down, if you will excuse the pun. Not every mattress pillow top is created equally and an item that is well made with quality materials is ideal.

You will know immediately if the mattress pillow top is tip top or not once you lie on it. There is no better way to find your ideal product than trying it out for yourself. However, there is no easier way to shop than online. So how can you be sure that you are getting the right mattress pillow top for the money?

I like to read online reviews to find what others say about the products for sale. These mattress reviews are so valuable because the customers don’t have any stock in the products they write about. It is nice to find information about a mattress pillow top that is written by a consumer who is completely unbiased about the item.

This objective report can be very helpful for those of us who want a new mattress pillow top but don’t want to throw away our hard earned money on a less than perfect product. Many online customer reviews offer insight into their experiences with the item in that you are considering.

There are plenty of options and even if you start reading mattress reviews you may find that you are still at a loss in making a decision. Try weeding out some of the options from the start. There are some ways to sort though the many different items available. Consider your own needs first then you can weed out certain items.

For example, some people may require a specialty mattress pillow top for their bedroom set. Some beds are custom made and this will lead to the need for a custom made mattress topper as well. Once you have determined that you need a product made to order then you can go from there.

Most of us simply want to find a mattress pillow top that fits our beds and provide some extra softness and comfort for our night’s sleep. No matter what there is certainly a product that is right for you.

House Organizing Tips

House Organizing Tips

You can take time to organize your closet or see what you can do with the mess in your garage, but what happens when it seems that your entire house is out of control. Those with smaller places often have this problem because they have too much stuff for the limited place that they occupy. Those with large houses, however, can run into the same problem. Most of the time it is because we don’t have enough time to keep up, and usually, children add to the problem. Look for some good house organizing tips to get things straightened up.

Some house organizing tips tell you that you have to get rid of some of the stuff that you really don’t need. This can be a hard process, especially if you do not know how to do that. You wouldn’t have the things you have if you didn’t think you need them. You have to get it into our mind that there are some things that you just have to part with and you are going to do it. You can come up with your own house organizing tips to do this. If not, there are a few suggestions you can use.

One of the best house organizing tips for this would be to come up with three boxes. Take each one with you into any room with which you want to start. Each box is for different things. One box is for what you know you have to keep and there is no question. The second is for things that you know you can be rid of without worrying about it. The third one can be for those things that you are just not sure you can part with, but you know that you should. Start putting these things into the boxes and watch your clutter slowly dwindle.

Once you have a good grip on filling these boxes, you should have more space in your room. You can then look around to see where you want to put what you know you want to keep. If you think about some common house organizing tips, you know you should keep each thing in a useful place. Books go on shelves, clothes into dressers, important papers into filing cabinets, etc. If you need more things in which to store your stuff, go to a store that sells things that are mentioned in other house organizing tips to store those things where they should go.

You can then decide what you want to do with the box that you know you can be without. You can have a sale if you wish, donate the items to charity, or you can simply throw them out. The toughest of the house organizing tips would be what to do with the other box. You can set it aside and go through it later, or you can be determined about it and do it right then and there. Really think about what you need and get rid of everything else. Once you do this in each room of your home, you are going to find much more space and a better feeling of peace once you are free of most of your clutter.

home decorating

Home Decorating No Comments »

There are many things that home owners can do on their own, but they should never do so unless they have some sort of ideas as to what they are really doing. You should never attempt to put on your own roof, or apply new siding if you have never been on a ladder or held a hammer in your life, and most people simply should not be touching any type of electrical wiring. However, home decorating is often something people can do with little to no experience if that is something they would love to do.

Home decorating can be simple or it can be complicated, but it should always be fun. The first step is deciding what type of budget a home owner has to work with, and then which rooms they may like to make over. Time is an issue, so it is also important to think about how much home decorating you really have time for. When thinking about time and home decorating, remember that things always take longer than estimated, so be very generous when thinking about your time line in regards to what needs to be done.

Once you have a time line and a budget for your home decorating project, you really have to think about what would make you happy. You may see designs that you like, but you may not be sure that they are for you. If you see something and you don’t fall in love with it right away, you should not use it. It doesn’t matter if it is the latest and most up to the minute design in home decorating, if you don’t love it today you won’t love it next week or next year. Go with what captures your heart, even if it is not what everyone else is doing.

Remember to tackle home decorating with a clear head. If you have never refinished hardwood floors before, you may not want to do it for the first time in your living room. You may not want to try to install lighting fixtures if you have never done so before. You can learn if you have someone to help you and show you want to do, but don’t attempt to do anything that could harm you or that could cost you a lot of money if you mess up. Have fun with your home decorating, but be practical about what you can do on your own and what you might want to find someone else to do.

What To Do With Empty Baskets

Home Decorating No Comments »

What To Do With Empty Baskets

More and more things you buy today come with a basket. Many times, these baskets are so beautiful that we loathe to through them out. You may have a place to keep them so that you can use them again in the future, but that is not always the case. There are many great things that you can use them for, and they can make great additions to any room in your home. Even better, they can look really good in almost any décor, and they are immensely useful as well. Think about some of these things before you start throwing out baskets that you really want to keep.

In my house, one of the biggest uses I have for empty baskets is as a place to keep things that might not go anywhere else, but may be used quite often. These are often small things that can easily be thrown into a basket. My husband works for a construction company, and he has a lot of keys that go with various buildings they own and maintain. We use one of our empty baskets as a place where he can keep these keys. Not only are they easily accessible, they are always in the same place and they never get lost.

I also use a few of my empty baskets as a place to put things that have no real home, and I am not sure I am even going to use again. I usually throw such things into a basket, and then go through them once a month. Usually, after that amount of time has passed, I can better decide if I am really going to need something again, or if I can safely part with it. This works well. Those that I want to keep can be put somewhere else or left in the empty baskets, and the rest can be throw out.

You can use your empty baskets to hold potpourri, gloves in the winter, a collection of seashells, and can also be reused to make things like Easter baskets, fruit baskets, or any other type of gift basket that you can make. They come in handy for so many reasons, and that is why I always keep my empty baskets. If you don’t have any, and you find that you want to have some for some of the above reasons, you can always find them at a rather good price if you look around online. They come in all sizes, shapes, and prices, and you can usually save if you buy more than a few at a time. They seem to be disposable at times, but they can be very useful in any home.
