What To Consider When You Are Choosing Pet Insurance

Animals, Pets No Comments »

Getting pet insurance will come in useful when you need it for both your pet and your finances. Imagine for a moment if your beloved pet develops a sudden extremely painful problem. You are going to be faced with an immediate and huge bill. Even worse, if you are unable to afford this huge bill, you may well end up with your pet suffering unnecessary pain for long periods of time. In the worst cases, pets are even being put down for illnesses which could have been treated had the owner been able to afford the payments on the insurance.

Pet Meds Savings Online and Coupons

Animals, Medical, Pets No Comments »

The cost of pet medications can turn out to be a big amount if you do not take action on cutting some costs while at the same time still meeting the needs of your beloved pet friends from fleas, ticks and heartworms.

Before making any purchase of pet medications for your dog or cat, take a look at these few suggestions and ways where you can save while caring your pet.

(1) Reduce Your Pet Meds Cost By Buying Generic. Consult with your veterinarian if generic brand medication is available for your pet. Specially, if you are getting something like a flea control product, you could explore local pet stores and discount department stores to see if their products are lower in price than what your vet has to offer. While these brands may be well known names and not generic, they are still probably going to cost less as compared to those sold at the veterinarian’s office.

(2) Save Your Pet Meds Cost By Using Coupons. This includes items of a medical nature purchased from stores as well as medicine purchased from the vet. Some of the well known stores whose products are found through your vet have discount coupons that can be sourced online or are even sent in the mail to customers on the mailing list. Check with your veterinarian if they know how you can acquire coupons or money saving deals on the products your pet requires.

(3) Save More Pet Meds Cost By Ordering Online. The Internet is a useful place for best buys in every category including pet supplies and medications. There are current major companies like 1800PetMeds and Pet Care RX who provide excellent deals and good discounts on a lot of commonly used pet medications. These companies and others like them provide even delivery services of the medication to your door, saving you the cost for you to drive across town and buy it from the vet. Source for coupon codes before shopping online with any vendor, as this can reduce the price even more.

Bad Dog Behaviors

Control Bad Dog Behaviors

What to do when Rover exhibits bad dog behaviors

Dog owners derive considerable happiness from these trusty pets. It’s known that older people who live alone, but have a dog are happier, healthier and live longer than those who don’t have the companionship of a furry friend.

Nonetheless, our beloved canines usually are at least mischevious sometimes, beating you to the newspaper and using it for a bone. At times, in his enthusiasm to love you, he jumps up to give you a hug and snags your favorite sweater on the way down. Then there’s downright bad dog behavior, such as snapping when annoyed or chasing the mail carrier. Dogs make wonderful pets, but they all must have training to quell their latent bad dog behavior tendencies. It’s best to start this training at an early age, because these bad habits just become harder to break, down the road.

Puppies tend to chew on anything small enough to fit between their paws. This is cute at first, unless it’s your prized Steinbeck first edition. You hate to punish this fuzzy little ball with teeth. You needn’t be harsh, but you’ve got to nip this habit in the bud. The old rolled-up newspaper is the best choice for this kind of discipline. It makes a loud noise, but does no more than sting that cute little nose for a moment. Even slapping the floor with the paper can do the trick.

You must catch them in the act and deal with them swiftly. Adding a verbal “Bad dog!” following newspaper application puts a little oomph into the action, as well as paving the way for future disciplinary action. After puppyhood has passed and infractions are fewer, a simple verbal “Bad dog!” is usually enough to correct most minor bad dog behaviors.

Jumping up on people is not something you want to encourage. Most bad dog behavior is cute when they’re small, but never when they’re grown. A medium sized dog can bowl over a child with disastrous results. When your dog jumps up, grab his front paws and hold them away from you at the same height. Don’t allow him to stand down. Quite soon, he’ll think this is not a great idea. He wants be on all fours, like a good dog. Hold him upright until he gets fidgety and whines. Gently let him down. You needn’t say a word. Don’t pet him or he’ll be confused, thinking it’s some sort of punishment-reward message. After several repeats, he won’t jump up on you or anyone else.

A gentle but consistent correction is sufficient to curb most bad dog behaviors. If your pet exhibits any malicious behaviors, such as snapping or biting, it’s probably best to engage a professional before the dog gets out of your control.

For all Rover’s virtues, there’s one character flaw in general: dogs find that roast on the countertop irresistible. I can’t help you with that one.

African gray parrot

Pets No Comments »

The African gray parrot makes an ideal pet bird, both smart and talkative!

Domesticated for close to 4000 years, African gray parrots were first kept as pets by the Egyptians and later, by the Greeks and Romans, as clever and entertaining house pets. These parrots are clearly visible in ancient frescoes and stone carvings. King Henry VIII of England also kept one of these interesting birds as a pet and companion.

Native to west and central Africa, they are a sociable group of birds who live in large flocks in the wild. The African gray parrot is also unusual in that they mate for life.

The African gray parrot is quite affectionate in nature and is one of the most talkative, sensitive and intelligent of parrots. They can acquire a vocabulary of hundreds of words, as well as some very distinctive and expressive sounds. The average lifespan of a domesticated African gray parrot is about 50 years! As with many birds, they can be snappish if feeling miffed, so the African gray parrot may not suit a situation where young children might be bit.

There are two types of African gray parrots, the Congo, which grows up to about 16 inches long, and his smaller cousin, the Timneh, which is just a bit smaller. You can tell the difference between the birds by looking at the beak. The smaller Timneh has an almost beige colored beak, while the Congo’s beak is black. Both have gray feathers and red-tipped tails.

These guys like a bit of room in the cage. One that is at least three feet by two feet should suffice. Give your vet a call and see what she advises.

The diet of the African gray is typically high in vitamin A, as is found in all of the leafy greens, such as kale and broccoli. They should also be fed a variety of nuts, seeds, berries and fruit. They also enjoy a bit of cheese every now and then. Most vets recommend vitamin supplementation to meet specific calcium needs. The amount of vitamin supplementation is rather precise, so be sure to consult with your vet for your bird’s recommended dose.

Perhaps due to their high level of intelligence, the African gray parrot needs a lot of attention to keep him happy. Experts generally concur that you should allow that a minimum of three hours each day be spent outside the cage. You’ll also want to be sure that you play with and pay direct attention to him for an hour each day. If neglected, he’s likely to become out of sorts and temperamental.

The African gray parrot can suffer boredom, which also does his temperament no good. To avoid this problem, be sure he’s got a selection of toys to play with while he’s confined in his cage. It’s a good idea to swap different toys in and out of the cage, so he’s got something new to fuss with on a regular basis.

If you intend to have your bird be a ‘family’ pet, everyone should spend time playing with and talking to him, especially when you first introduce him to your home. Otherwise, you run the risk of him refusing to socialize with anyone but the main care giver!

All in all, the African gray parrot has so many good points, making them a great choice in a pet bird.

Adopt A Puppy

Adopt A Puppy

Adopting a puppy was one of the best decisions in my life. My animal companion has brought me a lot of happiness. He is a friend in good times and bad, and is always waiting there with a goofy grin on his face when I come home from work. Nonetheless, the decision to adopt a puppy should not be taken lightly. Adopting a dog is hard work, and you have to be really willing to put in the effort, time, and the emotional commitment to make sure that your animal companion is happy and healthy for his entire life.

The most frequent problem that people run into when they decide to adopt a puppy is abandonment issues. Some animal adoptions are easy, but adopting a dog is often difficult. All dogs form strong attachments to their pack, and when they lose that pack early in life it can be traumatic. Many homeless pets go from owner to owner several times before they are finally adopted by family that cares for them. By that point, their ability to form close connections can be injured somewhat. Many of them are terrified that they’re going to lose their new owner as soon as they are adopted. When I first adopted a dog, I couldn’t even leave the house without him crying hysterically. He would wet the floor, run around barking, and generally become a nervous wreck.

Although this is not an extremely common experience among people who adopt a puppy, it is not all that rare. When you adopt puppies, you just have to deal with the issues that come up. In my case, I had to take off a little bit of time off of work to deal with my dog’s insecurities. I would leave the house for a minute or two at a time, then for three minutes at a time, five minutes, 10 minutes, and finally up to an hour. Even to this day, he doesn’t like when I leave the house, but now he can handle it a lot better. By working with him and helping him to feel more secure in the house, I was able to successfully deal with my dog’s insecurities.

You also have to be aware of breed traits when you adopt a puppy. People who buy dogs usually do research, but adoptive pet owners often just go in and buy the first dog that strikes their fancy. Different breeds have very different traits, so make sure you know what you are going in for. Some dogs need to work in order to be happy. You have to play fetch with them and let them carry your stuff around. Other dogs need a lot of physical affection, intellectual stimulation, or discipline. If you look into the issues before you adopt a puppy, you can find one that is just right for you.

Pole Bird Watcher

Pets 1 Comment »

Can you be a bird watcher and kitty lover too?

America is a country packed full of pet lovers. Almost every household in this country has a pet. Kitties are on the short list of favorite pets here, but what if you absolutely love kitties, yet want to enjoy birdlife in your backyard? This seems like an untenable combination. Your meowie, true to its species, is notorious for bringing poor birdies to your back door as a ‘present’. Can you be a faithful supporter of the Audubon Society and a kitty owner too? The short answer is, yes. A pole bird feeder keeps your feathered buddies out of danger from your naturally predatory, feline friends.

When you install a pole bird feeder in your backyard, you have the best of both worlds. You get to observe the local wild bird population and Kitty-kins will be a happy camper anyway. There are always insects, lizards and rolling in catnip patch episodes for alternative forms of entertainment.

The pole bird feeder is designed to provide refuge from all of nature’s predators, as well as serving as housing and a source of delectable and nutritious food. This type of bird feeder is certainly attractive to the local birds. A properly maintained pole bird feeder nurtures the birdies all year around in a setting that’s safe from your beloved kitty’s shenanigans.

For maximum enjoyment, placement of this bird feeder must be carefully analyzed. A sheltered location, close enough to your viewing area, yet far enough away from trees, or structures in which your feline friend might lurk, is perfect. A north-facing location is going to catch the cold winds of winter, so keep this in mind. You can also have more than one pole bird feeder. Look for a southern exposure which offers more protection in winter. In any case, look after the bird’s interests before satisfying your own convenience in bird-watching. A good pair of binoculars is all you need.

You’ll want to keep your bird feeder stocked with quality bird seed, so make it easy on yourself to faithfully keep a supply of food on hand. Don’t situate it so high that you’ve got to get out a ladder to restock the food supply. A pole bird feeder is one of the safest human-provided habitats. Keep it cozy and well-provisioned and you’ll enjoy a year around showing of birds that’s unbeatable.

Besides the pleasure you derive from bird-watching, your wild birds are an asset to your garden, keeping certain pests under control. Your kitty is a pampered pet anyway, right? You might use your binoculars to keep an eye on the Meowie’s attempts to storm the fortress you present with a pole bird feeder!

pet shedding

Pets No Comments »

Is your loveable pet shedding gobs of hair all over the house? Here’s the solution!

Let’s face it. You love your pets, and they give so much love back to you, but when pet shedding season starts, with hair left on every available surface of your house, it can drive you to distraction. If you’ve got allergies to pet hair, you’re done for, unless you can find a solution that keeps you and your pets happy.

Your furry friends, especially dogs, build up a substantial amount of extra fur to keep them warm through the cold months. Probably the worst case scenario involves long-haired dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors with indoor access as well. When spring rolls around, that dog starts dropping hair like there’s no tomorrow. Pet shedding season is upon you, and everything in your house. Kitties have lesser amounts of hair, but basically shed as they clean themselves year around. Cat hair, being finer, also tends to glue itself to your couch, bed rugs and any other fabric. Here we show you some ways to head off major pet shedding and how to minimize the problem at all times.

1. Groom your pet weekly, using an appropriate brush that’s made for the characteristics and sensitivity of your pet’s fur and skin. A thorough, weekly grooming removes the loose fur before it distributes itself, on you and your furnishings. This also stimulates the hair follicles and distributes your pet’s natural oils, with a nice shiny, healthy coat and less shedding, to show for your efforts.

2. Shampoo your pet whenever he or she needs it. This will be obvious! Use a shampoo formulated for your pet. Dog shampoos sometimes include flea and tick killers and may be too strong and harsh for a kitty’s system to tolerate. Use the right shampoo.

3. Trim fur in areas where the fur becomes quite thick in winter, as in the case of the tails and rear legs of German shepherds and Labradors. Grooming will help, but matting can still result. If you let this go, when pet shedding season begins, you’ll end up cutting out matted hair. When Fido starts shedding naturally, in response to warmer days, you’ll have unattractive, uneven patches.

4. Water-repellent fabric sprays, designed to allow you to wipe up spills on upholstery, also serve you well in the pet shedding arena. The hair won’t stick very well, making it far easier to wipe it off with a slightly damp cloth. Vacuuming is also easier and less time consuming.

Following this program will minimize both excessive pet shedding and maintenance. Now, it’s too bad our pets don’t seem to understand English. Then, you could simply chastise them, just as you do your kids. “Hey, get your feet off the chair, please!”

Parrot Bird Cages

Choosing And Caring For Parrot Bird Cages

Birds can be fun and easy pets, but they are not always as easy as you may assume. There are many different birds you can get, but one of the most common and popular is the parrot. These birds are colorful and can be an amazing addition to the family. When you have one of these birds, you have to know how to care for them. One big part of that care is knowing that you have gotten your bird the right parrot bird cages, and that you know how to keep it clean and hospitable. Pirates may have their parrot on their shoulder, but that is obviously not an option for you.

The parrot bird cages that you get are going to make a huge difference in how comfortable and happy your birds are going to be. If you have ever had fish, you know that they need a certain amount of space per fish or they are not going to thrive, and may even die very easily. The same can be said for birds. When you choose among parrot bird cages, you have to know that they have enough space to keep them happy and healthy. If not, your bird is not going to do well.

When you go to look at parrot bird cages, what you have to do is talk to someone in the store (or a representative at a web site) to be sure you are getting what you need. If the person with which you are speaking does not seem to understand what you are asking, you need to go somewhere else. Some really care about the health of your pet and some just want to make a sale. You don’t have to buy the biggest and best of the parrot cages that you see, but you do have to have one that is going to be the best for the bird that you have.

When you know you have found the right size you need for parrot bird cages, you then have to think about a few things in your home. If you have cats, or even dogs, you have more to think about then size. You are going to need something that is up off the ground, and that your other pet can not get to. That can be hard, but there are ways around all of that. That may mean your parrot bird cages are going to have to hang from the ceiling. You don’t want your bird in a constant state of stress due to other pets that you have.

You also have to remember that keeping our bird cage for parrots clean. No matter what materials you use as a liner, or how tidy your bird seems to be, you have to keep it nice. Not only is that good for the health of your bird, it is also good for your home. The smell from unkempt parrot bird cages can be overwhelming if they are not cleaned as they should be. Think about doing it once a day, or even twice a day, for the best possible living area for everyone involved.
